“They thought we were stupid to do it, (hide Jews) of course; in fact, it was beyond their comprehension that we would risk so much for Jews.” ― Diet Eman
Dutch ResistanceNot everyone was in hiding or worked for the Nazi's during the Holocaust. There were also people who worked against them. They were in the resistance. In this lesson you are going to look at 3 people from the Dutch resistance and write a short story about one of them. You are going to use information you find by skimming and scanning a text about them.
You are going to read about these 3 people on Wikipedia. Wikipedia
can be a good spot to look for information, but there is WAY TOO MUCH! You need to know what to look for and how to do it. ......and remember, if you use Wikipedia (which you all do), read and think 'is this important and is it true'.......be critical and think for yourself! |
Exercise 16 To learn how to skim and scan, just follow these steps! 1. To start, skim the texts of all three people. DON'T READ EVERYTHING! Skimming is just quickly looking to see if you want to read it better. 2. Then choose 1 person you want to write a short story about. 3. Use the keywords below to scan the text for important information. Scanning is reading a text quickly looking for words. You don't read everything well. You skip what you don't need and read carefully around a keyword. Key words (they are in the order you will find them in the text):
4. Write a short story about 1 member of the Dutch resistance, using information about the keywords above. Write at least 8 sentences and use at least 5 of the vocabulary words from lesson 1.
When you are writing, don't forget to write verbs (do-words) correctly and add '-ed' to the end because you are writing about someone who lived in the past. Don't forget to save your story! You must put it on your website! If you have finished your writing and want to hear and watch more about the Dutch resistance, then click here. |
